PEGASUS ARTISANS

CUSTOM DESIGNED JEWELRY

THE HISTORY -

Owner Donald Hoaglund - Jewelry Designer- Master Craftsmen

Donald Hoaglund began designing jewelry thirty years ago career as a Scrimshander ,creating unique and nontraditional Scrimshaw . But found that the commercial ready-made settings were generic and lacked imagination. As an artist he didn't want to limit his creativity. So he started creating unique and individually crafted jewelry settings to frame his scrimshaw designs which ranged from etched dragons, lions, celestial designs, symbolic pieces to a whimsical collection of cartoon and caricature etchings that were all one of a kind.

Don also sculpted ivory including carved whale tooth pieces -

portraying Merlin the Magician mermaid sirens, and bold Indians

complete with full headdress just to name a few. But as concerns about endangered species became prevalent he decided to move on to designing jewelry exclusively in precious metals, silver, gold, platinum, precious stones ranging from garnets, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, diamonds and so on.

Don's formal jewelry education included the Metals Program and the

Fine Arts Program in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at

UMass Dartmouth. Which eventually led to a journeyman experience and

hands on training from experts in the trade where he studied in Boston and

Florida. Don embraced his new found love in jewelry and metal design and after

doing the circuit of wholesaling his jewelry throughout the US and particularly on the East Coast from Maine to Florida. After awhile he and his wife Carol Hoaglund thought it was time to for him to put on the shopkeeper apron. He established his own jewelry store Pegasus Artisans in the Historic District of New Bedford M.A. . Don later was contracted as a Master Jeweler for an

International Jewelry Manufacturer in Johnston RI. He was part of a

design team that developed the original French crystal and 18kt Gold

White Diamond perfume bottle created for the Elizabeth Taylor

collection. Each perfume bottle was studded with 36 karats of

diamonds. He enjoyed this experience and working on a larger scale,

the position enhanced his jewelry making skills and brought new

jewelry design techniques to his repertoire. But eventually he decided to reopen Pegasus Artisans for retail business. Over the past twenty years Pegasus has grown and evolved from a fledging pipe ream to a successful and respected jewelry design business. Customers come to choose from the classic and exquisite Pegasus collection or o have a jewelry piece made exclusively for them. The requests for custom jewelry are always unique and challenging and by working closely with the customer Don is able to bring the client into part of the

jewelry design process by discussing the concept and providing sketches and wax model samples.

Pegasus has two part-time jewelry apprentices as well as receiving

assistance from his daughter Teale who does the professional jewelry

photography and daughter Willow who creates designs with pearls and

precious metals. Son Joshua Hoaglund is a master craftsman of

stained glass art and many of his pieces are displayed in the store.

And occasionally his wife Carol pokes out from behind her computer to

assist with window and display design.

Don has thirty-seven years of experience in the jewelry

business which has made Pegasus Artisans the place to come when you

want a truly classic jewelry design whether it be in the shop or
